Day One

  January 1st

"Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her.” Hosea 2:14 NIV

Everyone is called by the LORD.  How in tune we are to this depends on different things.  It is beautiful how He uses our times in the desert (and many translations say “wilderness”) to draw us closer to Him.

In the desert we try to quench our thirst with many things, relationships, food, tattoos, piercings, video games, TV, music, substances, sex… We are lost in the heat and the barrenness, being scalded by the sun and the sand.  We seek shade where there seems to be none.  Our fear is overwhelming.  The desert seems to go on without end.

In the wilderness we are surrounded by the overgrowth, and frightened by every little sound that could mean danger.  The trees obscure our vision and we cannot see what is ahead.  We tread along, tripping over exposed roots and rocks, dodging the creatures and plants that could harm us.  There seems to be no place to rest.

These are times God wants us to focus on Him.  We are to cling to Him.  Hundreds of time in Scripture we are told “be not afraid,” “fear not.” He is not forcing or threatening but enticing with love for us to go through these rough places.  He will speak love and tenderness to soften our hearts and share in a relationship with us.

Pray for grace to use these uncomfortable times to draw nearer to Him.
